Private Pilates classes in Randburg: who they suit and what to expect
Private Pilates classes in Randburg: who they suit, what happens in a session and how they compare with small groups. Find the right fit.

Private Pilates classes in Randburg give you an instructor’s full attention for the whole session, with a programme built around your body, your goals and any injuries or limitations you have. At Pilates Dynamics we offer private (one-on-one), semi-private and small group classes for all ages and fitness levels. This guide explains who private classes suit, what happens in a session, how private compares with group classes, and the other class types available at the studio.
Who private Pilates classes suit
Anyone can book private sessions, but they are especially useful if you:
- are completely new to Pilates and want to learn the fundamentals properly before joining a group;
- are recovering from an injury or have been referred by a physiotherapist, chiropractor, orthopaedic surgeon or other medical specialist for rehabilitation or functional training;
- are pregnant or have recently had a baby and need exercises adapted to each stage;
- train for a sport and want work that targets your specific demands;
- are an older adult who wants to build strength and balance at a comfortable pace;
- have a specific goal, such as improving posture, flexibility or core strength, and want faster, more focused progress;
- have a busy schedule and need a session time that works around it.
If you have a medical condition or injury, check with your doctor or physiotherapist first. Our biokineticist, Aurelie, works with our instructors and can help where extra care is needed.
What happens in a private Pilates class
Every new client starts with a beginner assessment, a private 55-minute session that combines a posture analysis with an orientation to the studio. Your instructor asks about your history and goals, looks at how you stand and move, and teaches you the Pilates basics: breathing, finding the right muscles and keeping good alignment. If you are new to the Reformer, they also show you how to operate it and introduce the range of movements it allows.
After that, each private session is planned around you. Your instructor chooses the equipment and exercises that suit your body on the day, whether that is mat work with small equipment, the Reformer, the tower, the Wunda Chair, the Cadillac or the barrels. Because nobody else needs attention, they can correct your form throughout, adjust exercises immediately and progress you as soon as you are ready.
You will sweat and shake, but with correct posture and quality movement rather than the kind of strain that leads to injury. Our focus is quality, not quantity.
Body composition and measurement assessments can also be added to private sessions as an elective, if tracking those numbers helps keep you motivated.
Private vs group Pilates classes
Both have a place, and many clients combine them.
Private and semi-private classes
- A programme built entirely around you.
- Constant feedback and correction.
- Ideal for beginners, rehabilitation, pregnancy and specific goals.
- Semi-private sessions let you share the instructor with a friend or family member, keeping a high level of attention while sharing the cost.
Small group classes
- A lower cost per class than private sessions.
- The energy and motivation of training with others.
- Small numbers, so your instructor can still see you and offer modifications. This is not a gym set-up with 20 people on Reformers, where good movement is hard to see.
- Best once you know the basics, which is why everyone starts with the assessment.
A common pattern is to begin with a few private sessions, move into group classes, and book an occasional private session to refine technique or work on a specific issue. For more on why class size matters, read are smaller Pilates classes better?
Other classes at Pilates Dynamics
Besides private Pilates classes in Randburg, we run a full timetable. Most of our classes are available both privately and in small groups. Here is a short overview:
- Mat Pilates with small equipment such as mini trampolines, Bosus, balance pads, toning bars, weighted poles, free weights, balls, rings, blocks, foam rollers and aerobic steppers.
- Large equipment classes on the Reformer, tower and Wunda Chair, plus the Cadillac, ladder barrel and arc barrel. Read more about Reformer, tower and Wunda Chair classes.
- Reformer cardio using the jump board.
- Stretch and barre classes to improve flexibility and range of movement. Stretching helps release tightness so the right muscles can be strengthened in good alignment.
- Pre- and post-natal Pilates on the Reformer or mat.
- Senior Pilates and sport-specific training.
- Kids Pilates for children aged 5 to 12.
- Teacher training and workshops through our academy.
All adult classes are 55 minutes and are booked as monthly subscriptions, so your slot is reserved for you month after month. That saves you the effort of booking each week and means nobody else can take your time. Pilates Dynamics is a Discovery Vitality partner, and our studio is centrally located in Darrenwood, Randburg, close to Linden and Northcliff.
